Prevent · Gentle AIRFLOW® Cleaning

A cleaning built to be gentler.

We don't do scrape-first cleanings. Gentle AIRFLOW® Cleaning uses warm water, air, and an ultra-fine powder to lift away the invisible bacterial film that leads to cavities and gum disease. It follows the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) approach: show the film first, remove it gently, then check the result.

Three intraoral photographs of the same patient at one hygiene visit: before cleaning, after a disclosing solution has stained the biofilm purple, and after Guided Biofilm Therapy.

One visit, three steps: disclose, remove, review — one patient treated at our office. Results vary.

What Gentle AIRFLOW® Cleaning is

Biofilm is the soft, nearly invisible layer of bacteria that re-forms on your teeth every day. It's where cavities, gum disease, and bad breath start.

A harmless disclosing dye stains the film so you see exactly what we see. Then the AIRFLOW® handpiece washes it away with warm water, air, and a slightly sweet erythritol powder. Scalers come out last, and only where there's tartar. That order is the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) concept, and it is how every cleaning here is done.

Comfortable, even for sensitive teeth
Warm water and a light spray instead of cold scraping.
Into the tight spaces
The powder stream reaches between teeth, along the gumline, and around implants, where a brush can't.
Gentle on implants, veneers & Invisalign® attachments
The spray cleans around restorations without scraping them, and it's a common choice for implant maintenance.
You see the before and after
The disclosing step shows you where you're missing at home, so you know what to work on.

If dental visits make you nervous, start here. Your first visit can be just a conversation.

Some patients also wear a Perio Protect® tray at home between visits; here's how the tray fits in.

Common questions

Does it hurt?
The spray is fine and low-pressure, so most people find it gentler than scraping, especially with sensitive teeth. Tell us if anything stings and we'll adjust.
What is the powder?
Erythritol, a sugar alcohol, milled ultra-fine. It tastes slightly sweet and is low-abrasion, so it's easy on enamel and restorations.
Do you still remove tartar?
Yes, wherever there is some, and only after the biofilm is gone.
How often should I come in?
It depends on your gums and teeth. After your first visit, we'll suggest a schedule that fits you. Some people need to come in more often.
