Prevent · Perio Protect® Tray Therapy

The part of gum care that happens at home.

With Perio Protect®, you wear a custom-made tray at home for about 10 to 15 minutes, once or twice a day. It carries a gel Dr. Oh prescribes into the pockets around your gums, working alongside your cleanings and, for some patients, laser therapy.

What Perio Protect® is

The Perio Tray® has a seal along its edge that holds the gel in the space between your gums and teeth. Dr. Oh chooses the gel, how long you wear it, and how often. It doesn't replace brushing, flossing, or your hygiene visits.

Alongside LANAP®

After laser gum therapy, most of the work of keeping your gums healthy happens at home. For some LANAP® patients, Dr. Oh adds a Perio Tray® to that routine as one more way to reach below the gumline. The tray hasn't been studied specifically after laser therapy; we use it because it's simple and keeps working on treated areas between visits.

If another office said you need gum surgery

That may well be right. Before you decide, it's worth a conversation. Dr. Oh will look at your gums and X-rays, measure the pockets, and tell you plainly what he sees.

For some patients, daily tray therapy alongside professional cleanings is a reasonable first step, with a date set to re-measure. For others, surgery or laser treatment is the better answer, and we'll say so.

We won't promise that a tray will make surgery unnecessary. Dr. Oh is a general dentist, and a tray is not a substitute for treatment you actually need. What we will do is measure, treat, re-measure, and be honest about what the numbers say.

What the research says

The research on Perio Protect® is small: a few short, manufacturer-supported trials reported greater reductions in pocket depth and gum bleeding when the tray was added to a deep cleaning, and no professional guideline has evaluated it. Results vary, so we measure your gums at every visit and change course with you if the numbers aren't moving.

Questions we hear

Is Perio Protect® FDA approved?
Cleared, not approved — and only the tray. The FDA cleared the Perio Protect® Tray as a device “to place solutions of the clinician's choice into gingival crevices or periodontal pockets” (510(k) K031809, 2004). It doesn't cover the gel and says nothing about any disease.
How long do I have to wear it?
Usually about 10 to 15 minutes, once or twice a day. Dr. Oh sets the gel, the timing, and how often for you.
What's in the gel?
Most often a 1.7% hydrogen peroxide gel, sold as Perio Gel®. Dr. Oh prescribes it for use with the tray and goes over how to use it at your fitting visit.
Can the tray replace a deep cleaning or LANAP?
No. It's an add-on to professional care. If your gums need a deep cleaning, LANAP®, or surgery, a tray on its own won't do that job.
Are there side effects?
Dr. Oh will go over them at your fitting visit. If anything feels off, stop and call us. We'd rather adjust the plan than have you push through.

Your plan, step by step

How a tray becomes part of your plan

STEP 01

Measure first

Dr. Oh measures your gum pockets and reviews your X-rays, then tells you whether a tray makes sense for you.

STEP 02

Digital scan

We scan your teeth and send the scan to the lab. Your Perio Tray® comes back made to fit your mouth.

STEP 03

Fitting and first session

You try it in with us. Dr. Oh checks the fit, prescribes the gel, and shows you how much to use and for how long.

STEP 04

Home routine, then re-measure

You wear it daily. At each hygiene visit we re-measure your gums and adjust: keep going, change something, or step up to other treatment.
